When the Art Committee at our New Haven synagogue, Beth El – Keser Israel (BEKI), launched an exhibition of members’ ancestors, the diversity of our congregation emerged. The exhibition highlighted that we are a mixture of shtetl descendants and urban sophisticates; of highly observant Jews and irreligious ones. We are descended from Jews who came early to America, and we are Jews who came as refugees. We can trace our Jewish heritage across centuries, and we are newly minted Jews. We shared our histories with labels identifying ancestors and personal remembrances, and synagogue gatherings became moments of enthusiastic spontaneous story-telling during the exhibition. |
