Tikkun Olam (Social Action) Schmooze

April 4, 2026
12:15 pm

BEKI is re-launching its Tikkun Olam (Social Action) Committee!

If you’d like to get involved, ask questions, or brainstorm ideas, meet Sat., April 4, at 12:15 pm for the schmooze. We are hoping the the Pesach energy of liberation, hope, and memory can inspire us.

What is the Tikkun Olam Committee?

We Jews bear a Torah imperative to attempt to create a world of hesed, a world of love, in imitation of God’s work creating this world from love. The work of Tikkun Olam is the work of collectively working to improve the world. We do this through acts of kindness, prayer, and service.
The reinvigoration of the Tikkun Olam Committee at BEKI aims to strengthen our congregation’s connection to meaningful service, learning, and engagement in the wider New Haven community. The committee will organize opportunities for BEKI members to volunteer with and learn from local organizations that address pressing needs and gaps within the community, identifying two to four partner organizations where congregants can contribute their time and skills. This volunteer engagement will be intentionally linked with programming at BEKI — for both religious school students and the broader congregation — creating opportunities to deepen understanding of the realities people face beyond our own community, explore how these organizations work to improve lives, and reflect on how such efforts connect with Jewish values, tradition, and scripture. Through this integrated approach, the committee hopes to foster sustained relationships, thoughtful learning, and collective action grounded in the spirit of Tikkun Olam.
